Goal Setting with Children | Experiencing Failure | The Kids Coach ...
It is important for children to experience failure and it is up to us, as parents, to help them understand the reasons they failed. It could be down to no fault of their own or it could be down to a lack of effort on their part. Whichever it is, children need to learn to dust themselves down and try again. They need to learn persistence. It is the people who persevere when confronted by disappointment that often go on to succeed and achieve great things.
Children who experience failure and see it is a learning opportunity to change the way they do things become more resourceful, independent and responsible human beings.
How does your child cope when they see that they have ‘failed’ at something?
My son still struggles emotionally with losing but we are working on encouraging him to keep trying. He has also recently started playing tag rugby with a local team and this is, slowly, starting to help him understand about getting up again and having another go.
I think it is really important that our attitude, as parents, is to always praise the trying hard, the having another go and, in terms of the sports he is involved in, appreciating good play in the opposing team. Not just praising winning or natural talent etc.
Growing up we were taught that there were no failures, only opportunities to learn. The joy was in the experience regardless of the result. I saw the benefit of this just last week with my 13 yr old grandson (who I have raised) when after his soccer game many of his team mates walked away after the game very sullen as they had lost…my grandson was still talking to one of his friends about how much fun he had!As we got in the car I asked him what the final score was…he wasn’t sure!
Great topic again Naomi. We lead by example on this I believe. It’s vital that we look at how we react to life and how we explain failure. The very word has such a negative connotation to many. I think failure can be explained as learning for next time. Let’s face it we will all experience it at some time and yes children do need support to understand the positives they can take from not always being the best and getting it right every time.
Each child, even within a family responds differently to failure. I was always the type of kid that was motivated by failure… but some children quit when they fail. Experiencing failure is crucial in raising resilient children, teens, and eventually productive adults. Many of today’s parents want to protect their children from every bump along the way…but this is not always wise.
