Get a handle on your garage in your Brevard home

Spring cleaning may not include the garage -- unless you are moving junk from the house into it -- but the ritual probably needs to.

Here in Florida especially, where few homes have basements, the place to store cars easily can become a dumping ground. Not sure what to do with something? Stick it in the garage until you figure it out.

"People don't have enough storage, and people just have too much clutter," said professional organizer Kelly Harding of The Space Whisperer in Melbourne. "The garage is kind of like the catchall."

Now is as good a time as any to take stock of the garage before the heat gets too stifling. (Though it already may be too hot for many of us.) Is the space functional or a junk heap? Are there better ways to store your stuff?

If you'd like to use your garage for the purpose it was intended -- parking your car -- here are some tips for clearing out the clutter to fit your ride.

Cleaning vs. organizing

Ask yourself, does the garage need cleaning or organizing? "Some people can just go out and clean their garage," said professional organizer Cindy Tyner of Functional Spaces in Ann Arbor, Mich. "They take the stuff out, sweep and put the stuff back where it belongs."

She said organizing is about function: Does the space do what you need it to do? If the answer is no, then organizing may be in order.

Consider weather

Remember the air in the garage can be hotter and more humid than the air outside.

"It's hot when you organize a garage," said certified professional organizer Marcie Katz of Expertly Organized on Merritt Island. "I like to do it, depending on which way the garage faces, early in the day or later in the day."

Get some fans to help you stay cool while you are working, said Sarasota-area professional organizer Mary Rice of Inspired Order.

"People want to quit when they get hot."

Clarify goal

For most people, the goal is to park their car inside, Katz said. But some people want to turn the garage into a fitness room, use it to store tools or play equipment or for a hobby. Your needs should define how you use the space, Kris Nielson, CEO of garage organizing company Gorgeous Garage, said in an e-mail. Are you a soccer mom, outdoor enthusiast, mountaineer? he asked.

Once you figure out the roles the garage needs to play, then you can think about the items that need to go in there and whether the space can perform all the things you need it to, Tyner said.
