BCHS physician among top 70 knee surgeons in the U.S.
Joseph Burkhardt, DO, of Great Lakes Bone & Joint Center and a member of the medical staff at Battle Creek Health System (BCHS) was recently named one of the top 70 knee surgeons in the United States. The recognition is made through Becker’s Orthopedic, Spine & Pain Management Review, Becker’s Orthopedic & Spine Review, a bimonthly publication offering news and analysis on business and legal issues relating to orthopedic and spine practices.
The knee surgeons were selected based on awards they received from major organizations in the field, leadership in those organizations, work on professional publications, and positions of service at hospitals and surgery centers.
Dr. Burkhardt, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon received his medical degree from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his osteopathic rotating internship and orthopedic surgery residency from Michigan State University at the Garden City Hospital campus.
He was awarded a fellowship in reconstruction (sports and joint replacement) at the University of Southern Florida through the Florida Knee and Orthopaedic Centers. He is the developer of the surgical technique for the mini-incision partial knee resurfacing for the Accuris Knee System.
He serves as the team physician for the Battle Creek Revolution, Single A professional hockey team, and the Albion College football team.
In addition to his practice, Dr. Burkhardt has published several articles in professional journals and lectured nationally on various topics regarding sports medicine, most commonly on treatment for cartilage damage and arthritis. He also lectures on performing total and partial knee replacements as well as hip resurfacing.
Dr. Burkhardt was one of the first orthopedists in Michigan to perform patient-customized replacement surgery. This was done at Battle Creek Health System’s Orthopaedic Renewal Center (ORC). The ORC specializes in patient education, physician ‘fast-track’ appointment coordination for diagnosis, knee and hip restoration, and group rehabilitation.
