A familiar face at new tire shop
While one longtime Sumter tire shop has closed, another one is trying to establish a new name in the area.
Chris Blackmon, a former employee of OK Tire Store of Sumter, has started his own tire business, DCB Tire and Wheel at 470 S. Guignard Drive. Blackmon worked 13 years at OK Tire before the store officially locked its doors on March 23.
Blackmon's DCB Tire and Wheel opened May 2. The new proprietor said he is excited about the opportunity to be an entrepreneur.
"I always considered being a business owner of a tire shop," he said. "My wife and I had talked about it in the past, and I thank God for putting me in this situation. I'm highly motivated to succeed. I feel I have soaked up a lot of knowledge from working at OK Tire over the years."
OK Tire existed in Sumter for 53 years and was established in 1958 by Albert Donal Allbritton. Allbritton later passed down the business to his two sons, A.D. and Joe. Joe Allbritton said he started working for OK Tire in 1977 after graduating from Clemson University. He added the family recently sold the building and property.
"I have no remorse that the business has closed because it's just the evolution of small business," Joe Allbritton said. "They have a life span, and the business had just run its course."
Knowing that OK Tire was going to shut down, Blackmon realized he'd be left jobless and it was important for him to strategize his best course of action to find employment. After deciding he wanted to start his own tire shop, Blackmon met with the Allbrittons to discuss a plan. The Allbrittons helped Blackmon by working out a deal to give him the equipment and supplies formerly at OK Tire.
"The bad news about OK Tire closing was it left me jobless, but the good news was that they bent over backwards to help me get established and set up," Blackmon said. "They've done everything in their power to help make me make this transition. The truth be told, if it happened any other way, I wouldn't be here today."
The closing of OK Tire left many of the Allbrittons' faithful customers in limbo about where to go for their tire service needs. Allbritton said Blackmon's history with OK Tire means their former customers can be comfortable going to someone familiar. Allbritton, who runs a home and car audio equipment business, said he has kept the old OK Tire phone number, so it can be routed to DCB Tire and Wheels when customers call.
"I'm glad to see him continue, and we have a customer base that needs servicing," Allbritton said. "They want to go somewhere they are familiar," Allbritton said. "They call me and tell me that they have never bought a tire from any other place in Sumter, and I tell them where they should go.

Will not happen. First, any internet connected person with 3 ounces of will can get a bootlegged copy of movies still in the theatres never mind later. Second, the early release of a movie by Apple would set off a tizzy from goliaths like bn.com, amazon.com, Walmart, NetFlicks and others. Third, if the extrapolations are correct and the videos are several GB then people with not so new computers (small HD) and/or slow connections will be left out. You've got to think of the masses not just the MacRumors regulars. It just doesn't fly. Keep up that attitude and continue wondering why no one talks with you as you type on your laptop in the middle of the coffee shop across from De Anza college. Sure, you may have helped get DB2 started and you still work in a DOS window but don't blame your wife for leaving you as you worked late at night too long. How much of the money from the IPO went to family attorney and court fees? The examples given in that link are extremely dumb. Nobody is going anywhere when they are at their PC. They are not being forced to make a spur of the moment decision when they use their computer, they have time to sit and read the dialogue and understand the consequences of their choices. We are not talking about reading the whole works of Shakespeare and we aren't talking about an annoying pop up every 5 minutes. There is absolutely no harm in educating the user a little.
