1984 • ACF Industries Inc. closes plant.
1987 • EPA conducts inspections of the factory, orders new owner, Hubert Thompson, to clean up PCB spills and dispose of PCB transformers and electrical equipment.
1991 • Thompson cites the lack of money, and stops cleaning.
1993 • Website referred to the EPA Superfund program.
1993-96 • on-site inspections revealed high PCB contamination in two buildings diecast. off-site tests showed low levels of PCB contamination on adjacent property owned by Herbert Hoover Boys & Girls Club.High levels of PCBs detected in the lines under Carter Carburetor site.
1996 • EPA orders cleanup part of the site.
1998 • EPA probe shows the main building high levels of PCBs.
2003 • sampling shows high levels of PCBs in the soil near the foundations of two buildings demolished, as well as PCBs and other contaminants in the soil beneath the plant site.
2005 • EPA reaches agreement with former owner ACF to collect data and develop alternatives for cleanup.
• More tests in 2006 showed chemical contamination at high levels in western floor main building, high levels of PCBs in sewage, asbestos and lead paint throughout the building.
2009 • Tests show chemical vapors at high concentrations in the main building.
March 30 • EPA approves $ 27 million cleanup.
