Learning how to commute on 2 wheels
Life-long motorists they might be, but the lure of scooter ownership proved irresistible to Cynthia Robertson and her husband, Stan.
Last fall, they bought a sale-priced, dark-blue Piaggio Fly 150, figuring it was now or never. He is almost 60, she will be 56 next month.
But winter came before they got it out on the road.

The arrival of spring — along with soaring gas prices and exorbitant downtown Toronto parking fees — renewed Cynthia Robertson's enthusiasm for budget travel.
First, she passed Ontario's Level One multiple choice knowledge test, which allows her to drive during daylight hours with certain conditions: no passengers, no alcohol and no road with speed limits of more than 80 km/h.
Robertson decided, rather than teaching herself, that she wanted training in a controlled environment. “It's better to learn good habits rather than how to break bad ones.”
She searched online and settled on Humber College's introductory scooter rider training course.
The session started at 8:30 a.m. for the nine participants. Seven of the riders were women, which is typical in beginner scooter school. Each paid $192.50.
Instructor John Currie began the Mother's Day session asking everyone why they were there.
Almost everyone seemed interested in cutting the cost of commuting.
A brief discussion followed about riding techniques, traffic scenarios and crash avoidance techniques.
“Don't be invisible,” Currie counselled. “Pay attention to what's in front but also what's behind. It's really important to always be aware of what's around you.”
Whenever possible, use arm signals to complement signals. Avoid blind spots when riding behind cars and trucks by making sure other drivers can always see you in their mirrors.
Everyone appeared to listen intently to the safety advice — a useful reiteration of the guidelines inside the Ministry of Transportation's Official Motorcycle Handbook, which is required reading for anyone planning to write the M1 test.
This group of novice riders — most had never been on a scooter, or had limited riding experience — then moved outside to the large and nearly empty parking lot, where a row of yellow and blue scooters awaited.
Rudimentary ground was covered: starting the ignition, proper braking and handling at slow speed.
