Midland sets stage for music, comedy, dance

Pat Benatar, Rosanne Cash, Tim Conway, Rickie Lee Jones and Huey Lewis and the News are among the performers coming next season to the Midland Theatre.

The performing-arts center, at 36 N. Park Place in downtown Newark, will present music, dance, comedy and family-oriented fare in five series, plus special events.

Benatar and Neil Giraldo (Aug. 23) will launch the Lively Arts Series.

Others in the series: Jones (Oct. 2); singer Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits (May 19); and the Blackpack’s “S.E.L.L.O.U.T!” tour (Feb. 4), four black comedians who celebrate individualism and challenge racial and social stereotypes.

Three trained and “talking” dogs will join comedian-ventriloquist Todd Oliver in the comedy show “Dogs Gone Wild” (Feb. 18), part of the Family Series.

Other family shows: “Magical Mask, Mime and Music of Japan” with Kuniko Yamamoto (Sept. 25); Gift of the Magi (Dec. 2); and the science-themed comedy of Dr. Kaboom! (March 23).

The Midland Memories Series will range from the folk music of the Kingston Trio (Nov. 18) to the big-band sound of the Glenn Miller Orchestra (March 11).

Also in the series: comedian Tim Conway & Friends (Oct. 16); and singer-actress Lorna Luft (Feb. 11), performing “Songs My Momma Taught Me: The Judy Garland Songbook.”

Guitarist Tim Farrell

(Sept. 15-16) and songwriter Steve Forbert (Oct. 27-28), whose ballad Romeo’s Tune has become a coffeehouse staple, will help launch the Stage Door Cabaret Series, set onstage with the performers in a nightclub setting with a cash bar.

Other cabaret acts: the Brazilian band Minas

(Jan. 19-20), New York singer-songwriter-guitarist Christine Lavin (Feb. 23-24) and electronic violinist Tracy Silverman (March 8-9).

The Variety Series will embrace dance with NEOS Dance Theatre’s multimedia Dracula (Nov. 25-27).

Other variety acts: the Nobodies of Comedy

(Jan. 27) and the magic act the Spencers (Feb. 10).

Among the special performances: Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel (Sept. 28); “Blue Note Records — the Miles Davis Experience” (Oct. 6), with the Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet; Huey Lewis and the News (Oct. 23); country singer Josh Turner (Oct. 30); “Sandi Patty Yuletide Celebration” (Dec. 8); and singer Richard Marx (Jan. 14).

Chuck E's in Love: Ricki Lee Jones

≪ Immortalized forever in Rickie Lee Jones 's 1979 hit "Chuck E.'s in Love," Chuck E. Weiss has had his own career playing the drums and singing in a craggly blues voice that recalls his more famous buddy Tom Waits , who provides production, vocal, and songwriting assistance. For years, however, he never made it beyond the confines of Los Angeles nightclubs. Here he's assembled an album of freewheeling bar tunes and jump blues that recall the music of his youth with fresh irreverence. "Devil with Blue Suede Shoes" is ramshackle back-alley Chicago blues. "It Rains on Me" offers Waits and Weiss singing like old drunken buddies after closing time. It's what you'd expect, yet couldn't conceive. > < Chuck E. Weiss can boast amazing credentials. Back in the 60s, he toured with Lightnin' Hopkins as a drummer. He later performed or recorded with Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon. During the 70s, he lived in Hollywood's famed Tropicana Motel, which was home to his best friend, Tom Waits. In fact, he is immortalized in a Waits song - "Jitterbug Boy (Sharing a Curbstone With Chuck E. Weiss, Robert Marchese, Paul Body and The Mug and Artie)" on the Spare Change album.
